Myakka River State Park
For a beautiful day in Florida wilderness, visit the Myakka River State Park. Wildlife tours include a guided boat or tram tour. Alligators abound in the large lake. You can also spot water birds, including cranes, ibis, egrets and herons. On a recent visit, we saw and heard wild turkeys. Ospreys were in the process of fishing, as well. The tram tour takes you off the park's roads into the wilderness. Guides will share what it must have been like to be a Florida pioneer - before air conditioning! For people who are interested in getting much closer to the wildlife, there are kayak and canoe rentals. For those who like a high view, climb the canopy walkway and 85' long suspension bridge to see beautiful views and close-ups of resurrection ferns and orchids.
Myakka River State Park is easy to find. It is located just 9 miles east of 1-75. Take exit 205 and travel east on State Road 72. Snack bar and concessions are available.

Englewood Beaches - Open for Business

Englewood beaches are open for business. Water here is pristine. The beauty of the Gulf Coast is breath-taking. Though we are all watching the tragedy in the Gulf with the oil spill, the area here is clear. We also have a lot going on with our cultural opportunities and parks that add another dimension to a visit here. And Sandpiper Key is right in the midst of the area. Because we are slightly off the beaten path, we have a low-key, laid-back atmosphere. Hope to see you soon!
